Mr. President

The change came.

I was born by the river in a little tent
Oh and just like the river I've been running ever since
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

It's been too hard living but I'm afraid to die
Cause I don't know what's up there beyond the sky
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

I go to the movie and I go downtown
Somebody keep telling me don't hang around
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

Then I go to my brother
And I say brother help me please
But he winds up knocking me
Back down on my knees

Ohhhhhhhhh.....

There been times that I thought I couldn't last for long
But now I think I'm able to carry on
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

More ILLA

Illa Baby is PDX's newest entertainment company and they're coming off the starting line with a dance / listening party for Q-Tip's latest hotcake LP, The Renaissance this Thursday at Pala.

Tip's album is beautiful - It purees remnants of Tribe's early earnerst, authentic messages with carefully chosen old school samples - Gettin' Up, the released single (see vid clip below) opens with a sample off Black Ivory's You and I from their LP Don't Turn Around. The Tip we all know and love has returned intact from his not-so-vibrant club-rotation days.

New ILLA J.

Oh goodness. This is hot off the griddle courtesy of SPECTRE Music.

We Here, a single off Yancey Boys, the newest LP from Illa J., the late, great Jay Dee's younger sibling, knocks with many of the same nostalgic musical touches that Dilla based his famous sound around. Illa croons more than Dilla and while his stage name is in clear homage to his brother, Illa has set his own sonic bar. The album includes guest spots by Guilty Simpson, Affion Crockett and Debi Nova.

New Crown City Rockers

The first time I saw Crown City Rockers perform was several years ago on the football field of UC San Diego's campus. The UC's student government alloted funds to be spent four times a year on concerts that were free of charge for the students and the Oakland, California crew played an opening slot for Mos Def and his Black Jack Johnson band.

Raashan Ahmad (MC), Woodstock (Samples/Percussion), Headnodic (Bass guitar), Max MacVeety (Drums) and the lovely Miss Kat Ouano (Keyboards) jam together seamlessly and exude high-level energy that is both infectious and captivating. Amidst nostalgic touches of City High (RIP) and Lucy Pearl (RIP), the crew supplies a big bold band sound where Ahmad's fluid flow fits alongside harmonized vocal additives from the rest of the rocker posse.

A couple years after the UCSD performance, I ran into CCR digging for wax at 360 Vinyl and had a chance to chat with Kat. She was soft-spoken and humble but the woman is a beast on the keys. Currently, the band is touring the West coast promoting 5 Gold Stars, their tertiary musical offering since 2000, following albums One and Earthtones (my personal favorite to date).

Spectre Music was kind enough to share one of the new singles off 5 Gold Stars with us. You can also peep Restless, their other melodic single, on their website.

Crown City Rockers will be in Portland at the Crystal Ballroom this Saturday, November 8th
